This is my mother. She left me when I was just 14 years old. I saw her a few times from teenage through the typical college years (although I didn’t have typical college years) and then she passed away before I married or had children. She was a wonderful woman that I know I would talk to her often if she were alive, but I really never got the chance.

The most current entries are things I would tell her and only her ... because they aren’t meant to be heard, just vented (if she were alive). The majority of this blog are letters she wrote to me (and a few to my sisters) during the years that we were apart.

December 14, 1989

Dear Betsy,

I didn't vanish but moved.  What a mess.  I am about 20 miles from Circleville and also from Lancaster.  We have been so busy.  I got a phone yesterday.  Please forgive me.  I was also in the hospital for hypothermia.

We are so poor.  It's expensive to move.  We had 2 trucks and one van and there is stuff in Toledo.

Are you and Kirstie coming for Christmas?  How is Kirstie doing?  Earl's son has 2 daughters 18 and 15 years.  Nice girls.

Church is at least 1/2 hour or more away.  Brand new building.  The first meeting is Sacrament at 9:30 am.  Are you so busy?  How is Ken?  I just talked with Sandy on her toll free line.  I asked her to call you and Kirstie and give you my phone number and address.

I am so sad because I have no Christmas presents to give.  I have no Christmas cards either.  Earl's son lives 15 miles from here.  Our home is nice but unpacked.  We had to have a ton of wood delivered.  Earl was killing himself.  We have 6" snow so far today.  Our 5 acres is really 1000 feet down from our deck.  All the wood is there.  Betsy, honey, I love you.  Come for Christmas, please.

All our love,

Mom and Earl

Dear Betsy,

We went to see Sandy and babies in Provo.  We had so much fun.  Couldn't find your address so that is who no post card.  Now I found it and the motel gave me the paper and envelope.

I didn't see much of Sandy.  We took them out to eat a couple times.  Mark went to California for a wedding.  Left Sandy with the girls.  She works 2 jobs and works so busy.

We should be home tomorrow.  We travel after darkness comes.  I sure love Markel and Alex.  Alex went to Earl.  I got pictures with my new camera.

So how are you?  Still so busy?  Write or call me about your love life.

Earl is fine.  He had a good time at Sandy's.  Alex smiles all the time.  Markel is pepite.  I love them both.  Earl nicknamed Alex to George.  She is such a happy baby.

Well, I will close.  I promise to get pictures to you.  I love you, honey.

Love,
Mom

Dear Betsy,

Glad to get your letter.  Earl and I are fine.  You sound a little down.  I hope things are going better.  Earl and I went together a short time and we are very happy so don't worry about short dating time.

I sent Kirstie a book.  I hope it helps.  How is she?  I have been depressed lately because everything is so overwhelming.  My problems are low BP, blood count which don't help things. I am OK so don't worry.

Gram and Gramp went to Michigan for 4 days and will be home tomorrow.  They needed some time away.

Earl and I go out for most meals.  It's almost as cheap to go out than cook.  I miss cooking though.  I used to cook well for your Dad; Bob was picky.  I don't really know about Earl.  He can't have spices.

Today is Sunday.  Our Sacrament meeting is at 4:20 pm.  It is cook and rainy now.  Good day for my feet and legs.  I don't have any energy.  I have a bad cough.  Earl wants to take me to a restaurant in Findley after church.

July 31
Another day is passed and I can barely see the paper.  I think I need bifocals.  I tried to call you last night but you were gone.  So I called Kirstie.  She sounds better.  I hope and she is better.  I sent her a book but she hasn't gotten it yet.

August 7

Earl and I went to Dunkin Donuts today for breakfast.  Here it is lunch time.  I eat a salad for lunch.  My doctor has me on this diet to lose 10#.  Your supposed to eat 1/2 cup cottage cheese, slice of 40 cal wheat bread and 1/2 glass orange juice.  Then for lunch a salad.  For supper you have turkey, chicken or fish.  Two days you get dark meat.  It's a 800 cal and not bad.  Of course, you get hungry.

Well, I will close for now.  I need new glasses.  I can't see good.  Remember I love you very much.  Take care.  Write me.

All my love,
Mom

Dear Betsy,

Glad to get your letter.  So happy you are becoming a missionary.  That is wonderful.  Earl has started reading the BOM you gave him.  Here is Jewel's, Mike's and Justyn's address…

Earl had a birthday June 27.  We have a lot of good times.  We love each other so much.  I have never loved like this way before.  Ear is good to me and good for me.  I have wedding pictures that are good and will get you some soon.  I keep forgetting.  It is hot here.  Bad time of the year for me with the feet and legs.  But we go out a lot.  I weigh 130#.  All the fattening I eat.  Went over to Jewel's last night for Mexican dinner.  Plus cake and ice cream.

I go to church every week and Earl goes also.  He is a Baptist (now).
I saw the GYN doctor and the repair looks good.  I can do anything but I can never lift anything.  Only problem now I started wetting the bed in my sleep after the catheter came out.  So we set the alarm for 1 or 2 am and I get up.  Last 2 nights I woke up with a full bladder before alarm and went to the toilet.  So maybe things are looking up.

Gram and Gramp said to tell you that they love you.  I love you so much, honey.  Thanks for writing.  I appreciate it.  Glad Kirstie is better.  Tell her I love her and will write soon.

All our love,

Mom and Earl

Dear Betsy,
I was so happy to get your letter yesterday.  I am glad you keep so busy.  I do too.  We are constantly on the  go.  I am still very much in love with my husband.  He is so good to me.  He is working in the library now for 2 hours or I could never find the time to write.  I want to read some scriptures too.  Plus we got a church book from my friend for the wedding.

I think I have lost a couple of pounds with my surgery.  Plus my breasts have milk in them.  I am still sore on my lower stomach.  Plus I have a bladder infection and am on Sulfa.  But doing good.

Earl bought me 3/4 carrot diamond pierced earrings.  He got me a diamond gold bracelet.  And he got me the most beautiful diamond ring I have ever seen.  He and I will pay on it for years.

Gram and Gramp are fine.  We went to Bob Evans for Father's Day.  Nothing fancy.  Ear and I eat out a lot.  We enjoy it so much.  Earl likes to take me places.

It is warm today.  It poured rain yesterday.  We got soaked.

Well, I have no more news.  I love you dearly.  I'll try to write more.  Remember I love you.

All my love,
Mom

May 27, 1989

Dear Betsy,
Just a short letter to let you know much you mean to me.  We had a lovely honeymoon in the Smokies.  I have never been happier.
I had surgery May 23rd for a bladder tie up.  However, when they got in they discovered my ovaries and appendix were bad so they took it all.  Yes, I am sore.
I may be able to go home soon.  I have a bikini incision and a catheter in also.  Earl is here 12 hours every day.  We are so happy.  Grandma and Grandpa came a lot.  The doctor told Earl that he was worried about the heart but I did fine.  I may go home today with catheter in.  How is Kirstie?  I do hope and pray she is better.  I wish I could afford to talk with her on the phone.  I know it would help.  How is Will doing with her?  Do you still thing he may be her problem?  Plus she hate her job at Horizons.  I told her to come here for a break.
Thank you for my Mom's day card and letter you made.
Our pictures are good.  Some of the one you took are dark but good.  Grandpa said it could be you didn't give the flash long enough to charge.  I'll send them all soon.
I love you honey.  I am so glad you came for the wedding.  It meant everything and more to me!!

Take care.  Write soon.
All my love,
Mom

Dear Betsy,

We want to thank you for the darling wedding bell and BOM.  Most of all we are so thrilled to have you come.  It meant so much to your mom.  I am still finding confetti hearts!

Well my surgery is over.  They tied the bladder up then had to take the appendix and my ovaries.  I still have a small catheter in the incision.  I will have a bikini scar.

Earl is wonderful to me.  He really loves me and I love him so much.

So how are you doing?  I hope fine.  I called 5 nights ago and left a message.  How is Kirstie doing?  I get no where when I talk to her.  I feel sorry for her.  I have been in her position.

All my love,
Mom and Earl

For a Special Daughter

It seems like only yesterday that you were so small and your life was just beginning and now you've grown into a beautiful and talented young woman …

Dearest Betsy,
You are a daughter to be very proud of and happy for, and you're wished much love and happiness as you face many bright tomorrows.

All my love,
Your mommy
