This is my mother. She left me when I was just 14 years old. I saw her a few times from teenage through the typical college years (although I didn’t have typical college years) and then she passed away before I married or had children. She was a wonderful woman that I know I would talk to her often if she were alive, but I really never got the chance.

The most current entries are things I would tell her and only her ... because they aren’t meant to be heard, just vented (if she were alive). The majority of this blog are letters she wrote to me (and a few to my sisters) during the years that we were apart.

2/5 - 2/11 2013

Here it is, another year has gone by from the last time I posted to this blog.  My mom passed away today 32 years ago.

I've haven't know what it's like to live with or have a mother to be your friend since I was 14 years old.  She left when I was 14.  We kept in touch through letters and phone calls, but it isn't the same as having a mom to be home for you or at events to support you.

Since last year so much has happened in our lives that I wish I could have shared with my mom.
First, I am still the President of American Mothers, Inc. for the State of Kentucky.  It doesn't require much of my time and I wish I could do more with the organization, but we just don't have the membership.

Second, Jessica is in her second year of college and submitted her papers to go on a mission.  She was called to serve in the Olongapo, Philippines mission.  She will report to the MTC after this semester is finished.  She is so excited and we are thrilled for her.  She knows it is going to be a complete culture change from her current conditions, but she is ready for the challenge.

Devon is a senior with aspirations of going to an engineering college.  He is an honor student at school and was chosen as the Student of the Month in December.  He's already been accepted at the University of Louisville's Speed School of Engineering and BYU Idaho.  We are waiting to hear from Ohio State University and BYU Provo.  His first pick is probably Ohio State (if money were not an option), but the least expensive school with the best engineering program is BYU Provo.  He has been driving for over a year, and working at the movie theater for over 2 years.  He finished this year as a varsity cross country runner with a PR of 17:52 for a 5K.  His team took 1st place at the state championship.  He is taking three AP classes (AP Physics, AP Calculus and AP Literature).  He also accomplished making the Gold Venture Award in scouting.  He is now working on the highest Venture award possible - the Silver.  Devon serves as the 1st assistant in the Priest Quorum and blesses the sacrament almost every Sunday.

Marissa is a sophomore taking one AP class (AP European History).  She also runs varsity cross country for her school helping them take 3rd place at the state championship.  Running is very important to her.  She improved her time and set a new PR of 19:54 for a 5K.  She came in 13th in the State and was named MVP for her team.  Marissa is also the Mia Maid Class President.  She is very good with her responsibilities there.  She finished all the requirements for earning her Young Women's Medallion and was presented with that on January 16th.  It is the equivalent of earning the Eagle Scout award.  She is running winter track and will start spring track in March.  She will also start driving and dating in March.  She is really growing up.

Robert is in his last year at the middle school taking advanced Math (Algebra 1) and Advanced Social Studies.  He has an average of 100% in almost all of his classes.  He didn't start out with this as a goal, but as he was doing so well, he has tried to maintain his excellent scores.  We've told him it is not expected to have perfect scores!  But it seems he is very capable of achieving them.  Robert also loves sports.  In the fall of this year he played soccer for the Kentucky Fire Junior and he ran cross country for his school's team.  His cross country team took first place at the state championship and he finished 30th out of everyone with a PR of 14:52 for a 4K (3rd for his team).  This is the third year they have been state champions!  Robert received the Steve Prefontaine award at the cross country banquet.  Not only has Robert excelled in school and sports, but also in scouts.  This fall he set a goal to finish his eagle project and this finish all the requirements for the eagle rank in scouts.  He organized a donation drive of hygiene kits (shampoo, conditioner, soap, tooth brush, tooth paste, dental floss, and a comb) for the American Red Cross.  He collected donations at NOMS and NOHS for about 6 weeks and then assembled the kits with the help of the Beta Club on 11/7/12.  He delivered 264 hygiene kits to the American Red Cross on Friday 11/9/12.  He will have his Eagle Board of Review later this month.  That is when he will officially become an Eagle scout.  Robert also is the Deacon's Quorum President.  He is always at church early to organize the deacons passing the sacrament.
